I completed my MS in Marine Sciences at the University of New England in 2014 and my PhD in Integrative Biology at Oklahoma State University in 2019, then I spent a year as a post doc at Virginia Tech. In 2020, I joined the Biology Dept. at the University of Central Oklahoma. My research focuses on how contaminants and changing environments affect an organism's physiology and behavior. Most of my research is with birds, but I have also used freshwater mussels and snails.

PAST UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Hallum Ewbank received a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences from UCO in 2022.  Hallum examined the effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on cardiovascular development in chick embryos. She presented her research at several conferences, received multiple Best Presentation awards, and was awarded the OK-INBRE SURP Fellowship for summer 2022. Hallum was admitted to the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Fall 2022.

Will Owens received a B.S. in Biology and Psychology from UCO in 2022. Will examined the effects of the antidepressant fluoxetine on snail antipredator behavior. Will has presented his research at several campus and regional events and received 2nd place in the student poster competition at the 2022 meeting for Ozark-Prairie Chapter of SETAC.

Taryn Smith conducted undergraduate research with Chris at Virginia Tech, where she studied the effects of lead (Pb) on avian red blood cell membrane integrity. Taryn presented her research at the the annual conference for the Society for Comparative and Integrative Biology. She recently graduated from VT and is pursing graduate research opportunities.

Jeff Krall conducted undergraduate research with Chris at Oklahoma State University, where he studied the effects of crude oil exposure on avian red blood cells. Jeff presented his research at regional and national conferences and received several Best Undergraduate Presentation awards. Additionally, Jeff received the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship, as well as several additional campus fellowships, and is a co-author on a publication. Jeff is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Colorado.

Kevin Grisham (middle) conducted undergraduate research with Chris at Oklahoma State University, where he studied the effects of crude oil exposure on avian embryonic development and immune function. Kevin presented his research at campus and regional conferences, and is co-author on a publication. Kevin is currently in Vet School.

Lauren Schmidt  conducted undergraduate research with Chris at Oklahoma State University, where she studied the effects of predator cues on snail behavior. Lauren received the OSU Wentz Scholarship in support of her work, and is co-author on a publication. She is currently a Physician's Assistant.
